The European Union has approved member states’ programmes funding research in sectors hit by the novel coronavirus epidemic, including Hungary’s scheme allocating 31.5 billion forints (EUR 89.4m) for wages in the sector.
The EC is approving programmes in line with its recently adopted temporary framework for the fight against the epidemic, in effect until December 2020.
Deputy EC head Margarethe Vestager said in her statement that the Hungarian programme supported experts and companies to continue research and development during and after the epidemic. Preserving jobs in innovative sectors is instrumental for the European economy to remain strong after the crisis, she said.
